Prenatal Support:

Mothers in Substance Use Disorder Recovery (Prenatal)

At HEED, we recognize that the prenatal period is a critical window of development, when a baby’s brain and body are rapidly forming, and the mother’s health and well-being directly shape lifelong outcomes.
For mothers in recovery from substance use, pregnancy often brings both hope and complexity. Many women are actively working toward wellness while navigating prenatal care, treatment, and the emotional realities of preparing for a child. During this time, consistent, compassionate, and coordinated support is essential.

Prenatal care for mothers in recovery extends beyond clinical visits. It includes access to substance use treatment, behavioral health services, trauma-informed care, and trusted community supports. When these systems are aligned, they help reduce stress, support healthy pregnancies, and promote positive birth outcomes.

Through our work across the SouthCoast and Rhode Island, we see that mothers in recovery are deeply committed to their children’s well-being. With the right supports in place, pregnancy can become a stabilizing and empowering period, one that begins to strengthen the bond between mother and child even before birth.

This section of the Birth to Five Resource Guide connects mothers to prenatal care providers, recovery services, and community-based resources that support health, dignity, and stability throughout pregnancy.
Grounded in the science of early development and The Basics, we know that early relationships and brain development begin before birth. Supporting mothers during pregnancy is one of the most powerful ways to influence a child’s trajectory from the very start.

Because every child deserves a strong start.
