Community & Cultural Connections:

Mothers in Substance Use Disorder Recovery (Community)

At HEED, we understand that recovery does not happen in isolation—it happens in community. For mothers in recovery from substance use, connection to supportive, culturally responsive networks is essential to sustaining wellness, strengthening families, and building a sense of belonging.

Community and cultural connections play a vital role in healing. They provide opportunities for peer support, shared experience, and trusted relationships that reduce isolation and promote stability. For many mothers, these connections are not only supportive—they are transformative.

Through our work across the SouthCoast and Rhode Island, we see that mothers thrive when they are connected to communities that reflect their identities, honor their lived experiences, and provide safe spaces for growth. Whether through peer recovery groups, faith-based communities, cultural organizations, or family-centered programming, these networks help reinforce resilience and long-term recovery.

This section of the Birth to Five Resource Guide is designed to connect mothers to community-based and culturally grounded resources that support recovery, strengthen relationships, and foster a sense of connection and purpose.

Grounded in the science of early development and The Basics, we recognize that strong communities support strong caregivers—and strong caregivers support thriving children. When mothers feel connected, supported, and seen, they are better able to nurture their children and create stable, loving environments.

Because every child deserves a strong start.
